Is it wedding season?

What is that anyway?…. in the last few years of photographing weddings James and I thought it was just an all year round thing, we feel pretty lucky to shoot any time of the year so when people casually drop into conversation “is it wedding season for you guys?” well yeah, but it’s always wedding season!

The thing is we’ve noticed a bit of difference this year, and it’s not because our diary looks any different, we’re still as busy in the same places as usual, but we have realised.. over the past month that other peoples wedding days become our life. We often start conversations with family and close friends like ‘we were at a wedding last week and …’ and there it starts, Weddings.. and with something you do week after week, sometimes every day of the week for several months straight, it could get a little bit tiring but you know what? It doesn’t.

Every weekend we set out with the same enthusiasm, sometimes a tiny bit more slow burning but we’re always thinking of new ways to shoot the day, different ways to get closer to our couples and families so that we see the emotion and feel a little of the enormity of their day so that we can capture all of it for them.

I’ve said this before to friends when I’ve realised it’s my only current conversation, but weddings are more of a big deal to us that even we realise. Each time we take it all in and if you keep your eyes and ears open enough on just that one day, you hear and see how these two people have started out their lives, how their nearest have nurtured them and taught them the ways they know, passed down family traditions and watched all their small triumphs and sometimes bigger mistakes! You can almost see their whole lives up until this day and believe me, it’s sometimes a totally mind-blowing and humbling feeling. It’s really a common thing that we cry and laugh along with them at the speeches and James has to tell me to just ‘put the camera down Jo!”

Just since the start of the year, so far we have been there as 17 of our couples have promised to take care of each other for as long as they can possibly manage. I can tell you now, it’s not possible, not for us, to go along and just take pictures and it just be our job, we listen, we chat about it all afterwards on the way home or in the morning with a cuppa and we think that from each couple, that we learn a little bit about kindness, and about two people learning to live together.

We’ll be honest and say somedays it is hard to see our friends meeting up at the weekends or taking their kids away on holiday and not have time to do the same, ┬ásometimes we look at each other in the middle of a wedding and I can tell we’re both thinking, just once in awhile it would be nice to have a little bit of this for us…. have some stories of our own to tell. We have been known to pass by someone painting their fence on a saturday morning as we drive through another location to another couples happy day and quietly say to ourselves “I’d like to do that one day!” Just something simple like sit and paint a fence or a wall and finish it.

So to answer the question.. yes, I guess it is the ‘season of weddings’ .. and we know it because we may have rendered ourselves fairly useless in everyday life at the moment, but we are so so grateful for every day we have the chance to see people coming together to celebrate what will in reality, after that day has passed, be a very normal life together.

Perhaps one day soon we will gather up our own story and pop it all together for a wedding day of our own!
